Shadowing Dr. Mackenzie Kelley has easily been one of the most impactful experiences of my dental education. As a Kois CE graduate, Dr. Kelley approaches dentistry at an exceptionally high level, and observing full-mouth restorative cases, smile designs, and mockups under her guidance was nothing short of inspiring. Beyond her clinical excellence, her true passion for dentistry makes learning from her something that both myself and other students genuinely look forward to. She has been the best mentor I could have asked for and has gone above and beyond in teaching me throughout my time shadowing her as a fourth-year dental student. Dr. Mac has taught me advanced occlusion concepts that are not covered in dental school and that many dentists are not familiar with in their own practices. She has shown me how to think beyond single-tooth dentistry and instead evaluate occlusion by looking at the entire system and patient as a whole. This experience completely changed the way I view restorative dentistry and reinforced what comprehensive, thoughtful care should look like. This is the level of care every patient deserves—care that is functional, long-lasting, and intentional—and Dr. Mac exemplifies why every dentist should challenge themselves to learn and provide it.

While shadowing Dr. Mac, it was abundantly clear to me that education is of critical importance to her. Not only did she explain the rationale and progression of each procedure I observed, but she also ensured that her patients were educated on the science behind every recommendation she gave them. She always made time for my questions, showing me the behind-the-scenes of her treatment planning, including smile designs and practice management. The summer I spent in Dr. Mac’s office energized me in wanting to become a dentist. On my last day at her office, one of her patients was a medical student who, speaking of her own mentor, said, “It’s wonderful to have a mentor you can look up to and say, ‘That’s the person I want to become.’” That is the mentor that I have had in Dr. Mac.

Learning from Dr. Mac has been truly invaluable. Her willingness to teach and her ability to simplify complex concepts in a way a dental student can understand have given me the confidence to incorporate more advanced techniques in our school clinic on my own patients. Dr. Mac has broadened my perspective beyond single-tooth dentistry and helped me understand that restorative dentistry is far more than patchwork. One analogy that resonated deeply with me was her comparison of dentistry to building a home. A well-thought-out plan is essential to the success of the final outcome, making changes without considering the structure as a whole can lead to results that fall short of expectations. Because of Dr. Mac’s mentorship, I feel much more confident and better equipped than my peers in how I treatment plan and carry out procedures for my patients. More importantly, she has helped shape the kind of clinician I aspire to become—one who values comprehensive planning, critical thinking, and long-term patient outcomes over quick fixes.
